 The Second Bulgarian Empire, also known as the Bulgarian Tsardom, was a medieval state that existed from 1185 to 1422. It emerged as a successor to the First Bulgarian Empire, which had fallen to the Byzantine Empire in 1018. The Second Bulgarian Empire was founded by the brothers Ivan Asen I and Peter IV, who led a successful rebellion against Byzantine rule. The empire's capital was Tarnovo, which became a major cultural and political center in the Balkans.

Under the reign of Tsar Kaloyan (1197-1207), the Second Bulgarian Empire achieved significant military and political successes. Kaloyan defeated the Latin Empire in the Battle of Adrianople in 1205, and his nephew, Tsar Ivan Asen II (1218-1241), expanded the empire's territory to its greatest extent. During this period, the empire controlled vast regions, including parts of modern-day Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, and Greece.

The Second Bulgarian Empire was known for its cultural and religious achievements. The empire supported the development of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, which played a crucial role in preserving Bulgarian cultural identity. The Tarnovo Literary School, founded in the 13th century, produced significant literary and theological works, contributing to the spread of literacy and education in the region.

The empire's decline began in the late 13th century, and it eventually fell to the Ottoman Empire in 1393, with the capture of Tarnovo.
